Seitz, the attorney representing Sykap's mother and grandmother in the suit, said that witness statements and bodycam video showed that the car was not moving when officers fired into it and that "the shooting was entirely unnecessary and unwarranted". The suit alleged that the Honolulu Police Department had intimidated relatives of Sykap and was withholding information about the shooting. On May 21, 2021, Sykap's mother and grandmother filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the involved officers and the City & County of Honolulu.
